Nothing Good - Just Bad & Ugly!

They don't build 'em like they used to! :-( Fortunately only the front engine cover photo (so far!) is of my GS. Be warned you do need to look after BMW motorcycles just as much as any other manufacturers' now-a-days, especially if you ride through the winter or it will be a mess in no time! ACF 50 ;-) SDoc100;-) FS365;-) and always hose salt off;-) Check out my website: MotorcycleInfo.co.uk >>> >>> >>> Unlimited photo storage and sharing - FREE Trial of SmugMug Quote the following code for a discount on signing up to SmugMug: xaLmW3ktAuOOM

  • BMW R1200GS final drive fire! September 2006 - Only case I've heard of but all the same....scary!!

Total Miles on bike, 11,300. All scheduled Services done as prescribed in Owners Manual.
65 MPH +/- 5 MPH - I felt it a rumble in the pegs about 80 miles previous. Pulled over put bike on Center Stand, no leaks, no play in rear wheel when grabbed and try to wiggle at top and bottom & left and right. Hit the road again and then the speedo went about 10 miles later. I was trying to get to Rock Springs to where I at least had modern conviences prior to tearing into it. It made to 22 miles north of there before a car pulled up beside and flagged me over.

Just goes to show that it's worth checking your bike over regularly - another good reason for washing and cleaning! :-)

  • R1200GS front engine cover corrosion - poor design, poor paint coating = gauranteed corrosion!
This is my 2005, well looked after (pampered!) GS just outside warranty - I had quite a fight with BMW Customer Services which eventually resulted in them covering parts cost + 50% labour

  • 2004 R1200GS, just under 2 years old at the time (still in Warranty), 20,0000 miles - BMW flat refused to do anything except replace the front engine cover. I don't know how well the bike was 'looked after' but it did have a full BMW Dealer service record - BMW said it hadn't been washed properly/often enough and that road salt applied in the uk is worse than other countries.
